Rochdale sits on the River Roch at the foothills of the Pennines and grew into prominence during the industrial revolution as a mill town servicing the cotton industry. Much of the town’s architecture dates back to this period, and Rochdale has many buildings built in the classic Gothic style. Principal amongst these is Rochdale town hall, which was originally crowned by a wooden steeple topped with a gilt statue of Saint George and the Dragon. In 1883, however, this spire was destroyed by fire and then replaced with the clock tower that stands to this day: designed by none other than legendary Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse who was also the designer of Manchester’s vast town hall.

Rochdale was crucial politically as well as economically during the Nineteenth Century, being a centre of radicalism and political reform. Most notable among Rochdale’s radicals was the MP John Bright who lead the Anti-Corn Law League. But Rochdale’s history extends further back than this, the municipality is recorded in the Domesday Book as an important market town, and before that was an important staging point on the Roman road that linked Manchester and York.
